CAMS major Henry Rownd '13 recently had an essay published in Film Matters 3.2 (2013). The essay is based on a paper Henry developed in CAMS 216: American Cinema of the 1970s, taught by Professor Jay Beck. The essay, "The Stewardesses: Soft-core Porn that Kills," investigates the paradoxical success of the 3D soft-core feature The Stewardesses (1969). In the paper, Henry argues that the film is built upon a series of contradictory impulses: of a group sex experience but also of a private space of sexual musings, of a celebratory easygoing comedy with a violent, dark, satiric ending, as both “realistic” and purposefully disorienting, as classy but also sleazy. Henry is currently weighing his options and will be attending graduate school next Fall.
